The first day of autumn 2020 will soon be with us and we’re already thinking about those dark cosy evenings, lighting multiple candles, settling down to watch a scary movie and drinking everything pumpkin spiced! – Autumn may well just be our favourite season.
Most of us spend more time at home in the later months, however this year we’ve all been stuck in our homes way longer than expected already. So, if you’re feeling the need for a bit of refresh, introducing a few simple additions and making the odd change here and there to correlate with the seasons, can make such a big difference. To help, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite ways to get your home ready for autumn!
1. Cosy home furnishings
Warm blankets and cosy cushions instantly make any area feel more snug and that’s exactly the atmosphere we want come autumn. There’s nothing better than curling up under a throw once the weather starts to turn!
A gorgeous chunky knit or a luscious soft teddy throw draped over chairs or sofas can really transform a space. You can choose to play with colour and add in any autumnal tones that may work with your current scheme. We simply adore a bit of colour this time of year – Helps to take away from the grey outsides!
Our top tip – Invest in cushion covers and reuse the cushions you have, this keeps costs down and means you don’t need to find storage space for your other set when you wish to switch up the look.
2. Declutter your home
Most people do their decluttering in the spring, but we feel autumn is another great time for a clear out. Christmas is on the horizon – yes we’ve dared to go there, which always brings bundles of new items into a home, so what better time to get prepared and clear some space.
Having a declutter can not only make a space feel bigger, but more calming too! Perfect for those upcoming relaxing evenings by the fire. Whether it’s sorting through a sideboard full of old DVDs, your kitchen cupboards or if you tackle the wardrobes, once done you’ll feel so refreshed and have a great sense of accomplishment. Also, you’ll be even more ready to go buy some new autumn inspired pieces to fill the space back again!
3. Candles, candles and more candles
Candles create the most gorgeous warm settings and there’s nothing that gets us more hyped for the autumn season than knowing we can indulge in all the fall-scents! Candles are a simple, low cost yet impactful way to transform any room in the house.
Offering a calm and homely vibe within an instant of being lit, there’s so many options for you to achieve your perfect autumn atmosphere. Try a large pillar candle in the living room for extra cosiness, whilst wax melts are ideal for placing throughout the rest of the house, be it on radiator covers, bookcases or even bedside tables.
4. Home storage heavens
Who doesn’t love storage! Every home needs storage and we find it becomes even more obvious if options are lacking come autumn/ winter. The bigger coats come out, boots are once again needed and soon, so will gloves, hats and scarfs! – If you live in the northern hemisphere that is.
We find a console table can make an ideal addition to your hallway, to help house some of these items without letting them take over your home! Place baskets underneath the console to keep garments neat and tidy whilst the unit itself can be dressed with tiny pumpkins, some statement candlesticks, lamps and a family photo for that personal touch!
5. Update your bedding
Climbing into a bed that’s covered with freshly washed sheets has to be one of the best feelings in the world, there’s not much that tops it, except maybe when those sheets are brand new too!
Updating your bedding can transform a bedroom like nothing else and it’s such an easy way to revamp your space. Autumn also brings a change to daylight, which can further impact the way your home feels. Colours can appear different, and you may feel areas either need brightening up or dulling down. You can easily achieve this by simply adding a new bedspread or updating your display cushions.
Colder evenings make climbing into bed even more enticing, so why not treat yourself!
If you really want to indulge, how about bringing in a touch more warmth with some new wooden bedsides? – You’ll soon be dreaming of getting back in to bed from the second you step out of it.
6. Fresh lick of paint
Something so simple can have such a big impact on your home. Providing your walls with a fresh coat of paint can make a room feel brand new again, even if you’ve used the exact same shade.
Say goodbye to those pesky scuff marks and relax among your new smooth walls, that will appear instantly more sleek and bright! You may find it even helps inspire some new additions to your home décor. Those fresh walls will be begging for some new artwork, or how about a stunning new focal mirror? – Perfect for bouncing daylight around the room!
If you really feel like a change, go all in with some new wallpaper. We think a mesh of different textures work great in the autumn and wallpaper can be the perfect way to add some depth and layers to a space.
